[英文] toward 與 towards 的差別

喬今天要跟各位同學分享自己也疑惑很久的toward/towards差別，以及其介紹！同學們是否也有對其疑惑的呢？希望喬今天的分享有幫助解惑！

▲toward(s) (介系詞) 向; 朝; 對著

[in the direction of, or closer to someone or something]

◆toward: 在美式英文(American English)與加拿大式英文(Canadian English)較常被使用，此二國家在寫作中對於toward與towards兩種拼音都是接受的。

◆towards: 在英式英文(British English)與澳式英文(Australian English)較常使用，此二國家在寫作中在大多數的例子中認為”toward”是錯的 (雖然技術上，並非是錯的，是習慣問題)。

☛因為台灣主要學習美式英文(American English)，基本上toward與towards是通用的，各位同學可以放心的按照自己的習慣使用。(但如果要到英國與澳洲兩個國家進行考試就自行注意兩者的使用了)

e.g. She stood up and walked toward(s) him.

她起了身子，朝他走去

e.g. He leaned toward(s) his wife and whispered, “Can we go home soon?”

他側過身子輕聲問妻子：「我們快點回家好嗎？」

e.g. She kept glancing toward(s) the telephone.

她不停瞄著電話那頭

e.g. The country seems to be drifting toward(s) war.

這國家似乎正慢慢走向戰爭一途

e.g. There is a trend toward(s) healthier eating among all sectors of the population.

各行各業的人都有一種追求健康飲食的趨勢

☛ aspect toward(s) life 人生觀

☛ perspective toward(s) + O. 對於..的想法/意見

☛ attitude toward(s) + O. 對於..的態度

☛ toward也可當形容詞，意思為「即將到來的、進行中的」，但現在較少使用，其反義字untoward意思為「麻煩的、困難的、不幸的」。
