[英文] 易混淆字彙系列: 費用/花費/利潤與好處/趨勢與風靡

喬今天要分享的是容易搞混的單字區,主要挑四類高頻率使用字彙,希望各位同學可以弄清楚這些字彙的相異點,同學們一起來熟悉今天的分享吧!


 【費用】
fee (n.) (付給專業者例如醫師/律師)專業服務的費用; 服務費;
legal fee 訴訟費
university fees 大學學費
an entrance/registration fee 入場/註冊費
e.g. We could not pay the lawyer’s fee.
我們付不起律師費

tuition (n.) 學費
[the money paid for teaching]
e.g. Few can afford the tuition of $12,000 a term.
很少人能支付得起每學期12000美元的學費

fare (n.) 車資; 交通工具上的費用
[the money that you pay for a journey on vehicle such as a bus or a train]
e.g. Train fares are going up again.
火車票又漲價了

【花費】
expense (n.) 金錢/時間/努力之付出; 代價
e.g. We’ve just has a new garage at great expense.
我們剛用了很多錢蓋一座新車庫
e.g. We went on holiday at my father’s expense.
我們去渡了假,一切費用由我父親付

expenses (n.) 開銷; 花費; 業務費用; 為達某目的之費用
[money that you spend when you are doing your job, that your employer will pay back to you]
e.g. I need to get my expenses approved.
我要去辦核銷手續

expenditure (n.) (有經過預算)支出; 財務耗損; (政府或個人的) 全部開支
[ (U or C) the total amount of money that a government or person spends]
e.g. It is part of a drive to cut government expenditure.
這是削減政府開支的一個方法
e.g. The government’s annual expenditure on arms has been reduced.
政府已經縮減了年度軍備開支

[ (U) the act of using or spending energy, time or money]
e.g. The expenditure of effort on this project has been enormous.
已經在這項工程上付出了重大的努力

cost (n.) 花費; 代價; 成本
[the amount of money needed to buy, do or make something]
e.g. When you buy a new computer, you usually get software included at no extra cost.
買電腦時通常免費附送軟體

e.g. For many parents, two salaries are essential to cover the cost of school fees.
對許多家長來說, 要支付孩子學費雙職薪水不可少

e.g. The supermarket chain announced that it was cutting the cost of all its fresh and frozen meat.
這家連鎖超市宣布其所有鮮肉和冷凍肉減價銷售

【利潤/好處】
profit (n.) 利潤(做生意獲得的); 獲得利益
e.g. She makes a big profit from selling waste material to texile companies.
她將廢棄材料賣給紡織公司,從中賺取大筆利潤

e.g. A year ago the Tokyo company had a pretax profit of 35 million yen
一年前,東京公司的稅前利潤是3500萬日元

benefit (n.) 益處; 優勢; 好處; 捐贈所得 補助金; 救濟金
unployment benefit 失業救濟金 (英國)
e.g. I’m on benefit at the moment.
我目前靠救濟金過生活

advantage (n.) 好處; 優勢; 有利條件
[a condition giving a greater chance of success]
e.g. The advantage of booking tickets in advance is that you get better seats.
提前訂票的好處就是可以得到比較好的座位

reward (n.) 報答; 報酬; 酬謝; 獎勵
e.g. There’s a reward for whoever finishes first.
無論誰先完成都會得到一份獎賞

award (n.) 獎項; 獎牌; 獎勵

merit (n.) 優點

【趨勢/風靡】
fashion (n.) 流行(服飾/造型方面尤其); 時尚
e.g. Long hair is back in fashion for men.
男士又流行長髮了

e.g. Fur coats have gone out of fashion.
皮草大衣已經過時了

vogue (n.) 流行; 時尚
[a fashion or general liking, especially one which is temporary]
e.g. In the 1920s, short hair for women became the vogue.
20世紀20年代,女性留短髮成為時尚

fad (n.) 流行; (暫時的)狂熱
the latest health fad 最近健康時尚
e.g. There was a fad for wearing ripped jeans a few years ago.
幾年前有一陣子流行穿有洞的牛仔褲

craze (n.) 風潮; 流行; (暫時的)狂熱
e.g. Cycling shorts were the latest craze that year.
腳踏車運動短褲是那年最新的流行時尚

trend (n.) 趨勢; 潮流; 趨向; 傾向
[a general development or change in a situation or in the way that people are behaving]
e.g. Surveys show a trend away from home-ownership and towards rented accommodation.
調查顯示,出現了一種從私人擁有住房轉向租賃住房的趨勢
e.g. There’s been a downward/upward trend in sales in the last few years.
過去幾年,銷售額一直呈下降/上升趨勢
